I have imagined it, having grown up with an alcoholic parent, and through other long-term close encounters with alcoholic family members. Alcohol may not have directly caused any of this, but the danger it represents as a drug is clear to those that have experienced it.
I don’t see this as an issue of insufficient “government regulation.” I do see it in part as an issue with societal attitudes toward the drug, and with the heavy influence exercised by modern media. There is also the inclination to look away from the deeper problems people may experience that lead them to self-medicate with alcohol. We should all be looking within ourselves in order to better understand these issues.
